Dear Prime Minister,
Australian Live Animal Export Trade: Gaza Evidence
I am writing to you because I am so profoundly disturbed by the recent footage from the
Gaza Strip showing horrific cruelty to Australian cattle.
I have always thought that Australia cared for its animals and set a good example for
animal welfare. It is clear from recent reports to come from Australian media about the
Australian live animal export trade, that this is false.
Australia is voluntarily supplying its animals to countries where there are no laws to
protect them. Worse still, the cruelty in Gaza is not the first of its kind that we have heard
of. It is inconceivable that a country such as Australia would continue to export animals
despite horrendous cruelty being documented to them in countries such as Egypt,
Indonesia, Kuwait, Jordan and Palestine.
I am appalled that Australia is still sending its animals to such places, all countries
without effective animal protection laws, and still using the age-old excuse that if it pulls
out of the market, then the animal welfare standards will deteriorate.
Australia is not setting a global example of good animal welfare. It is encouraging and
endorsing cruelty. That is how the world views Australia’s position in this market. This
trade is negatively effecting how Australia is viewed internationally.
As the Prime Minister of Australia, you have the power to stop this unacceptable cruelty
ever happening again. I implore you to do this and I am appealing to your good
conscience to do so.
Yours faithfully,
